I have a confession… senior photography is a favorite of mine to capture.  Maybe it’s because my first “real” session was 10.5 years ago with my sister, as I photographed her high school senior photos, or maybe it’s because when I started Kendra Martin Photography senior sessions were where I started… either way, I adore getting to document high school seniors OR college seniors.  Guys or gals… I think both types of sessions are fun and I LOVE getting to know whoever it is in front of my camera.  I love hearing what they are involved in, where they are looking to go to college or where they are going, or what they are going to do after graduation, etc… Seniors are so fun for me and breathe so much life into me not only while the session is happening, but even while I’m editing, to right now as I am blogging one.  My senior year of high school was tough.  I had moved to a new city, which meant… new school, new coaches, new church, new everything so I can say senior year I was concerned about one thing only…. getting through that year and going to college where I could be at the same school for four straight years!!  But during my senior year I took a film photography class and it’s where I became hooked on photography!!  That class is one of the reasons I am sitting here today as a photographer.  I had quite a few people love on me and take me in as a friend that year and even though they probably wont read this… I want to thank them.  Senior year is hard, and so throw in being the new girl… well I can’t thank those that befriended me that year enough.  It still means soo soo soo much to me!!!

During my senior year I had two experiences with “senior photos”!!!  One of which was a total surprise because it was makeup picture day/didn’t go to the school the previous year so it was time to have your drape photo taken for the year book… geeze that was a nightmare and I don’t look back on those photos or experience fondly.  BUT my mom, the spring of my senior year schedule a senior session for me with a photographer there in Charlotte and that was a GOOD experience!! I had NO idea what to expect.  The internet then, is not what is is today so I only saw a handful of images this photographer had taken but boy was I excited.  This sweet photographer had a studio in his home where he did both studio portraits and also portraits outside in his AMAZING yard!!  I probably asked him a billion questions…  but he was soo soo kind and willing to answer them all and it was a great experience for me.  I love those photos… every time I see them at my parents house I still smile because no matter how hard that year was for me… y’all those photo portray who I was and I love it!! Yeah they are a little more posed than I will EVER make my seniors be but I’m still a fan of them!!!

I just wrote a book about me… but I wanted to share a piece of my heart and a little bit about my why for senior photography.  I want my seniors to feel the way I did… the way I still do about my senior session and the images that I walked away with.  I want them to look back at their images and smile!!  They aren’t the cheesy drape photos or sitting on the year you graduate numbers.  My senior sessions are me and that senior with hopefully mom or dad or both or siblings tagging along, having fun!! Learning about them, what makes them tick, what they want to do when graduate that year… My senior sessions are simple.  More than anything I want moms and dads to see the images of their son or daughter and know that’s exactly who they are/were at that time in their lives!!  Last Sunday afternoon I had the absolute privilege of having Anna Grace in front of my camera.  Y’all this young lady is sweet as can be.  She’s funny!!  She’s smart, she’s athletic… but what I saw during that session more than anything was that this girl loves.. and I saw it in the love she has for her family.  Her mom and little sister tagged along and I loved seeing them together.  The jokes, the smiles, the “ohh my gosh my baby is almost graduating”, the love that Anna Grace radiates!!  I’m so excited for her as she finishes up her senior year and I’m even more excited to see where she’ll head in the fall!!!  Anna Grace,  THANK YOU for wanting to get in front of my camera!! I loved getting to know you & I’m looking forward to seeing where life takes you!!!  Here are just a few of my favorite images from her session!!

When you find someone to love on your fur baby for you when you’re out of town it’s awesome!!  Kayla & Anthony have loved on our Daisy a few times and we couldn’t be more thankful.  We don’t even have to think about her when we leave her with them because we know they will love her as one of their own!!  They watched her for us a few times this summer and so as a thank you I told them I’d like to do a session for them.  Well wheels went into motion for Anthony I believe ;)!! He asked Gary if he thought I’d mind if he popped the question during the session.  Well NO, I don’t mind!!!  So without Kayla’s knowledge Anthony & I started planning the perfect proposal months ago… What I really love about this story is that Kayla is the one that really made her proposal happen ;)!!  She made sure their outfits were just what she wanted, had her hair & makeup done, nails done (those were sort of at Anthony’s urging ;)), she helped pick location, date… you name it she had a hand in it… everything about this session Kayla touched and knew about (other than the proposal of course!!).

The date arrived and y’all it was probably the most beautiful weather of November… it was PERFECT!!!  I was soo nervous though… nervous enough that I got all my gear, the ring (yes Anthony trusted me with the ring… and usually I wouldn’t have said yes to that but I know him and he and Gary are friends so I made sure it was put away and kept safe!!), and chalkboards (You’ll read more about those in a bit) ready EARLY, EARLY that morning… even though the session was later in the afternoon!!  I wanted everything to be perfect!!  I met the two of them at a beautiful location and we started the session!!  As far as Kayla knew this was a couples session to say thank you and so that’s what I did for the first half of the session.  I was soooo stinking nervous… mainly because Anthony had given me full control of when the proposal would happen!!!  I usually have my couples do things like dance and walk together and other little things to evoke emotion and movement into my photos but I knew I had to do a little more in order to make “the proposal” part of the session seem legit to Kayla and like something I always do at session!!  We got to the spot where I wanted the proposal to happen and I gave the two of them chalkboards (and no I don’t usually carry chalkboards with me but Anthony thought it’d be a cute idea to have them write what they love most about each other… and I loved the idea, so I went with it) and had them turn their backs and stand a little bit away from one another.  I documented them writing and took Kayla’s photos first and from the beginning of this little “game” I kept telling them that they couldn’t turn around because we were going to go into something really fun afterwards.  So i grabbed her board and put it away, went over to Anthony took his photo and then took his board and got in place as he turned around and got down on a knee… at that point I asked Kayla to turn around and go give Anthony a hug… and that is when she saw him.  Y’all it was the sweetest!!! I have NO idea what Anthony was saying because I was too busy trying to keep it together while I was taking photos but I do remember Kayla just being in such a happy state of shock.  She at one point backed away and then went running at Anthony to kiss him!!  It was the sweetest and it was such an honor to be able to document this for them.

I let the two of them just do their thing for a little while and then we went on to take “engagement” photos!!!  This was such a fun fun session to document and be part of!!!  Anthony, thank you for wanting me to document this for you two!!  Thank you both for watching my fur baby so then all of this could go into motion!!  I am soooo stinking happy for y’all and I am sooo excited for y’all!!!!  Due to the proposal this session yielded A LOT of images… so there are quite a few here.  This was a hard session to pick photos for because I want to share them ALL…. but for now, here are just a few of my favorites!!

Mel - Ahhhh!!! What a fun capture and amazing moment to be a part of! Love the fall colors too.

When Marla contacted me I noticed that her fiance 😉 had the exact name of a young man that I grew up with (well I grew up with his sister but I have known him from a very young age) so in my response back I asked if Tyler had gone to Ledford and if so if he was the same Tyler that she had listed as her soon to be groom.  Sure enough it was the same Tyler!!!  What’s so fun is that I’ve known Tyler since he was probably 4 years old… which is crazy to even say but at the same time soo awesome!!  Soo you can imagine that I was crazy excited when they asked me to be their wedding photographer!!  Being asked to document someones wedding day is always special to me but it is even more special to document someone I know on one of the most important days of their lives and I can’t tell you how excited I am to document Tyler & Marla!!  I have had a lot of fun catching up with Tyler and at the same time getting to know Marla!!  These two are soo amazing together and I have loved getting to be around the two of them.  I am very excited to see what God has in store for their marriage!!

Marla & Tyler made the short trip 😉 from Greenville to Spartanburg for their engagement session.  We started the session downtown, and then ended it in probably one of my favorite locations to take photos!!  I love that they wanted to do both urban and nature because it gives them two completely different looks!!  I had a lot of fun watching these two interact and love on each other.  The way they make each other laugh and smile… the way Tyler holds Marla’s hand at all possible moments (she says it’s because she’d fall in her heels) but I honestly think he probably does it even if she’s barefoot.  The way Tyler steals a look at her and vice versa… 🙂 these two… well they made that Saturday afternoon/evening a favorite of mine!! Tyler & Marla, I am soo looking forward to your wedding in April!!! Thank y’all soo much for wanting me to be your wedding photographer!!  Here are just a few of my favorite images from the engagement session!!
